BETWEEN
Marie Béland
Marie Béland’s focus in BETWEEN is on speaking as body movement. Embedded in an incessant spoken discourse full of gestural automatisms, thus creating an “invisible choreography” which questions the identity of a dance that is free of gestural dancing, but filled with danced gestures.
Part of a trilogy with BEHIND: une danse dont vous êtes le héros (2010) and BESIDE, BETWEEN is the result of an artistic and financial collaboration between maribé – sors de ce corps and Montréal Danse, and their respective artistic directors, choreographer Marie Béland and dramaturg Kathy Casey.
Marie Béland’s work has been uncovering what performances typically hide: their mechanisms, their ramifications and their clichés. She is exploring the link between art and life and how the choreographic aspect of life allows art and dance to become entwined. What do the dancing body and the everyday body have in common, where do they overlap? To do so, she constantly challenges the spectator, investigating the invisible and proposing choreographies asking us to look BEHIND, BETWEEN or BESIDE
coproduction
Since its founding in 2005, maribé – sors de ce corps has produced singular works where indiscipline is organized with precision and spirit. Marie Béland invites the public to perceive art and dance as systems responding to the same rules that govern our society, especially those that punctuate our human relationships. Each piece takes an extensive look at our ways of being together: dance, through its mechanisms and trends, mirrors who we are and our individual and collective choices.
